Unveiling tree ring around Tree of Friendship

subject: Bath

A special tree ring has recently been unveiled on the avenue of Bath. This tree ring is a symbol of the 80-year-old city link between Alkmaar and Bath.

The corten steel ring is placed around the existing Bath tree. This tree – an oak – was planted on March 6, 2025 and tells the story of connection, help and friendship between the two cities.

Friendship
In the tree ring, a pattern of wavy water is cut out. This represents the difficult and uncertain period during the Second World War, when the Alkmaar resident Eli Prins fled by sea to England and found shelter in Bath. During that same period, Bath was committed to supporting Alkmaar with relief goods such as clothing and food. The waves on the tree ring also become calmer. This represents the lasting friendship that emerged from this time. Under the ring, root patterns run down into the ground. They stand for the growing and lasting connection between the cities.

Street organ
The link between Alkmaar and Bath was officially established in 1945 as a sign of solidarity after the war. To raise money for the rebuilding of Alkmaar, a barrel organ was used in Bath. They collected money on the street. This organ was later donated to Alkmaar and has been in the town hall ever since.
