On February 23, 2025, 21 students from PCC left the Lyceum, together with three supervisors, on a trip to Darmstadt for an exchange with German schoolchildren. This trip was part of an internationalization project with the theme ‘My place, our space‘, which is funded by the Erasmus grant fund of the European Union.
The students signed up for this project with a motivation letter. They stayed with pupils of the Georg-Büchner-Schule in Darmstadt, Germany. Darmstadt is one of the twin cities of Alkmaar. The AUC has been supporting the cooperation between the schools for many years. During the exchange, hard work was done on the project.
My place our space
In this project, the students investigate how the municipalities of Darmstadt and Alkmaar give young people the space to spend time together. They look at public places like parks, recreation areas, and non-profit youth centers. To this end, the students have the public places where they would like to be selected and assessed. They asked themselves questions like:
-
- Accessibility
Is the place easy to reach? Can you get there by public transport, and is it also wheelchair accessible - Safety
Do you feel comfortable in this place? Do you think others feel the same way? What makes you feel safe or not feel safe - Inclusivity
Who is this place for? Do you think everyone feels welcome here? Can you be yourself here - Points for improvement
What would make the place even nicer for young people?
- Accessibility
For this exchange, the German participants have chosen the places in Darmstadt that they like. Together with the students from Alkmaar they visited and viewed these places. All findings are processed in an app, so that everyone who visits Darmstadt can easily find their way around. The app contains location data and can be filtered by categories.
The pupils presented their results and the app to three representatives of the municipality of Darmstadt (Youth Affairs, Tourism and Marketing and International Relations).
On Thursday the 27the this exchange came to an end. On the way back to Alkmaar, the group made another stop in Frankfurt for a City Walk.
Next exchange
The app can be downloaded from the app store.
